Mar en calma en la bahía de Sant Antoni, Ibiza

What drives us

A way of life, not just a business

Essence Sailing comes from thirteen years working on board, a deep love for the sea, and a real commitment to leaving the lightest possible mark on it.

Where we come from

Before the name existed, the habit did: up early, read the forecast, prepare the boat, go. Thirteen years managing and skippering boats in the Mediterranean, with seasons in the Bahamas and St. Maarten too, adds up to a lot of miles — but above all it teaches you what actually makes a day at sea a good one.

It is almost never the boat. It is that everything was thought through before you stepped on board: the ice made, the route decided from that morning’s forecast, the anchorage chosen because it will be calm at that hour rather than because it appears in the guides. That invisible work is, in truth, all of the work.

Why we prepare boats one at a time

We do not run a huge fleet and we do not want to. We prepare each boat one at a time, with care and without rushing, because it is the only way to really know her: what noise she makes when something is off, what she actually burns, how she behaves in a head sea.

That knowledge is what you feel later on board. A skipper who knows their boat does not improvise, they anticipate. And anticipating is what turns a day of sailing into something comfortable rather than a run of small surprises.

Crew are trained by sailing

We train our captains by sailing together. No manual replaces standing beside someone when the wind shifts, when you have to decide whether to go out at all, or when a guest gets seasick and it has to be handled without spoiling the day.

We look for people who care for the boat as if it were their own and who treat whoever steps aboard as a guest in their home, not as a customer in a service. It is a difference that is hard to explain on a website and very easy to feel on board.

Pradera de posidonia oceánica en el Mediterráneo

The sea is not scenery

We make our living from a place that is wearing down, and that carries obligations. We always anchor on sand, never on posidonia, and use a buoy where one exists. We leave nothing in the water. We turn the music down in small coves and natural parks, even when nobody is watching.

We do not say this as a marketing line: the meadows that make the water around Ibiza and Formentera look the way it does take decades to recover from one bad anchoring. If we want to still be showing people this in twenty years, the maths does itself.

Transparency, including the awkward kind

We tell you what is there. If a famous restaurant has poor reviews, we say so before booking it. If the forecast is against us, we suggest changing the route or the date instead of going out anyway for a mediocre day. If something breaks, it gets reported, documented and fixed.

For owners who trust us with their boat, that means condition reports with photographs, detailed write-ups and no surprises on the invoice. We would rather have an awkward conversation early than a disappointed client at the end.

What all of that turns into

Guests, not customers

Whoever comes on board is a guest. That changes how they are welcomed, briefed and seen off.

Boats as homes

We look after every boat as if she were ours, whether or not she is sailing that day.

The day, tailored

There is no catalogue route. It is decided from the morning forecast and from what you feel like.

No small print

Clear prices, extras stated upfront and no surprises at the end of the day.
